Scott | Scott Ladzinski - Threw originals from 1991 - 1994. About Scott: "I worked there from 1991 - 1994 while I was going to college at CSU in Fort Collins. I grew up about 1 mile from the old roundhouse that Van Briggle is located in. When I went to college I started studying Graphic Design and Pottery, the first summer I came home for break (1991) I went to Van Briggle to see if I could get a summer job. Craig (Stevenson - owner) asked me if I could throw on the wheel because they had just lost a potter (Fred had just recently retired, or semi-retired i should say). I said sure I could and he had me throw some pots for him to show I could do it and what my style was. He liked me right away and at the age of 18 I became a potter for Van Briggle. I worked there every summer and Christmas break until I graduated. My signature on the bottom of the pots changed every summer because at the time I did not realize the importance of it in identifying pieces in the future. I had an SL, an SL with the L running down the middle of the S, and then just my name 'Scott'"

F | Possible unknown - Although many Artists who primarily threw on the wheel did multi-duty in many different capacities, Fred Wills (see "F" and "FW" above) states that he is not aware that any items he finished were ever marked with an "F." He states that items finished by Artists while he was employed at Van Briggle were generally left unmarked as to Finisher, although Van Briggle recently said many were, but does not give a date frame. Of the several examples of items marked with an "F" finisher mark presented to Mr. Wills, he states that he doesn't think he finished any of them. Still unresolved is the question of whether all Bottom Etchers adhered to this rule. Note also that those who finished the visible surfaces of cast items did not necessarily incise the bottoms with the traditional VB bottom marks, including finisher initials. Most bottoms were etched by a person who did only that - and did not finish the visible surfaces.... hence a different category for "Etchers." |
